Weekly Bloodlines for May 24th

I’m back with another helping of Bloodlines for ya, and it’s a big one! Let’s get right to it.

First up is a movie that quickly went onto our “extremely intrigued” list here at the Bloodsprayer, HELL BABY!

HELL BABY, a comedy scripted by Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant (Night at The Museum, Reno 911!: Miami) marks their co-directing debut. Jack (Rob Corddry) and Vanessa (Leslie Bibb) are an expectant couple that moves into the most haunted fixer-upper in New Orleans — a house with a deadly demonic curse. Things soon spiral out of control for Jack and Vanessa, as well as their-not-so-helpful neighbor F’Resnel (Keegan-Michael Key), Vanessa’s friendly psychiatrist (Michael Ian Black), Vanessa’s Wiccan sister Marjorie (Riki Lindhome) and the detectives assigned to look into the rising body count (Rob Huebel and Paul Scheer). Only the Vatican’s elite exorcism team (Garant and Lennon) san save them — or can they?

Keep an eye out for more info on this one as we get it!

The Collective, a leading entertainment management and production company, and top horror website BloodyDisgusting.com, present the psychological thriller THE HAUNTING OF HELENA as part of their Bloody Disgusting Selects film series. A tale of a mysterious woman, a little girl, and her single mother, THE HAUNTING OF HELENA presents a new twist on the legend of the Tooth Fairy.

After a divorce, Sophia moves to the south of Italy with her daughter, Helena. Their new home, an apartment within an austere building of the fascist age, is a chance for them to start a new life. But inside an old storage room hides a mysterious closet and a buried secret. After the loss of Helena’s first baby tooth, a chilling obsession begins and an apparition haunts her sleep. Dreams become nightmares. Nightmares become reality. When Helena collects her classmate’s fallen teeth with an urgent hunger, it is clear that there is far more to their new home than can be seen. Sophia finds herself in a terrifying fight to save her child while maintaining her sanity. THE HAUNTING OF HELENA will keep you at the edge of your seat as it slides in agony along the sharp blade of psychological terror.

THE HAUNTING OF HELENA will be released in select theaters on June 21, 2013. It will be available on Cable VOD in partnership with Tribeca Films and for digital streaming on June 18, 2013.

Horror films often take their cue from daily newspaper headlines, feeding on the all-too-real fears of the everyday world. Like the best science fiction, sometimes horror lies just around the corner or beyond the bend of what we know. On July 30th, Anchor Bay Films unleashes the biological warfare thriller THE DEMENTED on Blu-ray™/DVD combo pack and DVD. From the creative minds behind I Spit On Your Grave and A Nightmare on Elm Street, THE DEMENTED is a terrifying excursion into a plague-infected world…where one moment off guard is all that keeps us from becoming them.

With a hot cast including Sarah Butler (I Spit On Your Grave), Brittney Alger (21 Jump Street), Kayla Ewell (“The Vampire Diaries”), Richard Kohnke (“The Carrie Diaries”) and Michael Welch (The Twilight Saga Franchise), THE DEMENTED will have you on the edge of your seat until the very last frame! SRP for the Blu-ray™/DVD Combo Pack is $29.99 and $24.98 for the DVD. Pre-book is July 3rd.

THE DEMENTED follows six college friends as they meet up for a carefree weekend in a beautiful rural home. A terrorist missile attack in a nearby town infects much of the townspeople with a deadly virus that induces rabies-like symptoms…with devastating consequences. Ravenous and fast, the infected townspeople turn their sights on the vacation home where the friends are gathered…and are now barricaded. How long can they hide? Even with the infected “sleeping” in the streets, can they make their escape? If so, to what?

Two of my favorite words in the horror dictionary are Italian and Zombies.  ANGER OF THE DEAD is hoping to bring back some of Italy’s horror greatness from years past, but they can’t do it without our help!  ANGER OF THE DEAD is an independent work and has been totally self-produced. For this reason, a campaign of fundraising has just started and anybody can take part in it at the following link.  There will be no gain from the staff itself because this is a no-profit enterprise. All of the funds that any users are making available will be totally used for the making of ANGER OF THE DEAD and any users will be awarded for their effort, in relation to the amount of their donations.

For any other information of ANGER OF THE DEAD, check out the official Facebook page.

Who doesn’t love a good comic book movie in the summer?  Tempe Video is proud to announce their addition to the genre, CAPTAIN BATTLE: LEGACY WAR, coming to DVD on August 27th!

Based on the 1940’s Golden Age comic book, CAPTAIN BATTLE: LEGACY WAR follows the exploits of Sam Battle, a Gulf War soldier injured during a tour of duty. Near death, scientist friend Brandon Storm injects him with a secret serum that brings him superhuman strength and agility!

Safely back home, Sam must rescue his old friend from the clutches of a Neo-Nazi gang led by The Necromancer, who is hellbent on returning Heinrich Himmler from the dead. Using the crime-fighting alter-ego of Captain Battle, Sam will face an army of living dead soldiers straight out of the Third Reich before The Necromancer can succeed at raising Adolph Hitler himself from the grave!

After Dark Films proudly announces the fourth film in its After Dark Originals 2 series (ADO2), CHILDREN OF SORROW. A film that delivers a petrifying look into a cult psyche. CHILDREN OF SORROW is directed by Jourdan McClure (Rogue River, Die Maniacs Die!), written by Ryan Finnerty (Rogue River, Smosh), starring Bill Oberst Jr (Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies, Take this Lollipop) and Hannah Levien (The Palace Players) .

“We are so excited to welcome Jourdan McClure into the After Dark Family. He’s an incredible talent. CHILDREN OF SORROW is such a thought provoking and disturbing film. It sparked many debates and was the cause of endless sleepless nights.” -Stephanie Caleb, EVP Creative Affairs

Simon Leach is a very, very sick man. Thriving on despair, pain, and panic, he unites a group of broken and desperate people in the middle of the desert. He showers them with the love and affection they’re so desperate for, but Simon has a much greater plan for his followers.

“Belongingness can be a terrifying subject, even more so when acceptance is disingenuous. CHILDREN OF SORROW is the nightmare version of that.” -Jourdan McClure, Director

Ready for something twisted?  Award winning Danish music director Michael Panduro has announced that he is in pre-production on his first feature film, POSTPARTUM.  However, like most small budget films, he’s looking for a little fan support via an indiegogo campaign.  This is what the film description on the indiegogo page says…

POSTPARTUM is a feature length tale of having children – and all the bodily horrors that come with it. It’s a psychological, slightly surreal and very gory horror-film, that plays on the idea of children as parasites and explores themes not normally seen in Danish cinema. Think Cronenberg’s “The Brood” mixed with Von Trier’s “Antichrist” and you’re getting close.

It is also the feature film debut of award-winning music video director Michael Panduro, who’s work has caused a bit of a stir from time to time, challenging the boundaries of gore, sexual allegory and general good taste in music videos.

We don’t want to spoil the plot here, as there are some surprises in there. But if you’re into folks like early David Cronenberg (or indeed junior’s “Antiviral”), Shinya Tsukamoto and Marina de Van, then you will be into this (we hope)!

What exactly is POSTPARTUM about?  Who the hell knows, but it looks and sounds deliciously disturbing!  Also keep an eye on the official Facebook page for any further info!

Feature Film Launches First-Of-Its-Kind Kickstarter Campaign
The filmmakers behind GARDEN OF HEDON launched an unprecedented crowd-sourcing campaign today. Crowd-sourcing is traditionally used to fund the creation of feature films, but the innovation of the GOH campaign is that the film is already complete, and if the funding goal is reached, the producers will release the film for free all over the internet via torrents, Youtube, Vimeo and more.

Writer/director Kevin Kangas says it’s a “scary but intriguing” thing to attempt. He came up with the concept after being frustrated with traditional movie distribution. “Back in the day,” says Kangas, “like when Lionsgate distributed my second flick FEAR OF CLOWNS, a distributor would give you a healthy advance and then offer to pay you back-end royalties (which you’d never see). But the advance was normally enough that it didn’t matter. Then your film would come out about 18 months later.”

The problem now is that distributors are offering little-to-no advances, says Kangas, and most movies get rolled out on VOD platforms first and eventually may see a DVD/Blu-ray release up to five years later. “It’s frustrating. Distributors don’t want to pay you because they claim torrents and pirating are eating up their profits, so I thought ‘Why don’t I try to use the torrents to help us distribute the film?’”

Enter the internet and crowd-sourcing. “If we raise what is basically our budget for the film,” says producer Luke Theriault, “we can get this movie out to everyone. You can watch it on your laptop, on your ipad, on your Xbox or your Playstation, or any internet-enabled Blu-ray player. There will be torrents in DVD and Blu-Ray quality. It’s instant gratification.”

Kangas added that those who still enjoy physical media can get a Blu-Ray at the $40 donation level.

The film, about a detective trapped in a supernatural house where women are being murdered, stars Richard Cutting(“National Treasure 2”), Danielle Lozeau(“Legion”, “The Eye”), John C. Bailey(“The Men Who Built America”), Beau Peregino(“A Haunting”), Paul Sieber(“Ninjas Vs. Vampires”) and Manuel Poblete(“Game Change”). The music score is by veteran composer Chad Seiter(“Fringe”, “Star Trek”, “Lost”).

Last but certainly not least is a teaser trailer for CREEPER, from MC Entertainment.  Check out the official synopsis below.

Heather and her friends have some devilish fun on the social website, ConnectMeNet. However, their amusement has come at the expense of a lonely and medicated half-wit, Jerry Tobin. After goading him into humiliating himself on camera in various cruel acts of depravity, they post the clips online for the world to see in a video titled “Revenge on a Creeper”. This ruins Jerry’s meager life and he disappears without a trace… Fast forward a year, and the tables are now turned when Jerry reemerges, off the antipsychotic medication that clouded his thoughts and kept his demons at bay. Now the girls are forced into a nightmarish fight for their lives!

You can order the unrated convention version of CREEPER (and director Matthew Gunnoe’s other film THE PIT) at this link.

That is gonna do it for another edition of Weekly Bloodlines.  Till next time….

Matt has been a fan of horror films since his first trip to the video store when he was transfixed by classic vhs cover art. Now he primarily enjoys films from the grindhouse era of the 70's and 80's, but holds a soft spot in in his heart for low budget flicks.
