MENA FILMS UNVEILS
KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN TO FUND
MALEVOLENCE 3

Fans and Filmmakers Embrace New Business Model
for Film Production Funding

NEW YORK – In 2005, Stevan Mena’s debut feature film Malevolence was a surprise hit when it was released theatrically and on DVD. Written, co-produced and directed by Stevan, Malevolence told the shocking but enthralling story of masked serial killer Martin Bristol, whose story hit a nerve with horror fans and mainstream audiences all over the world. Intended as the second act of a sprawling trilogy, fans were rewarded in 2011 when Stevan explored the origins of Martin’s tragic creation with Bereavement starring Michael Biehn and Alexandra Daddario. Now, the final suspenseful chapter is about to be told…but we need your help.

Mena Films announced today the launch of their Kickstarter page to start production of Malevolence 3. Once again, Stevan Mena is writing, directing and producing, along with longtime co-producer Tim Bristol and producer/actor Brian O’Halloran (Clerks). Through Kickstarter, fans can contribute funds towards commencing principal photography – even pre-ordering the Blu-ray™/DVD! In addition, fans who commit targeted minimum pledge amounts will be eligible for exclusive incentives including signed scripts, tickets to the premiere party, a Skype session with the cast and filmmakers – and a chance to appear in the film! The Malevolence 3 Kickstarter page can be found at: http://www.kickstarter.com/malevolence-3.

“The movie business is changing. More and more control is being taken back by the filmmakers,” observed O’Halloran. “Kickstarter is the perfect bridge between letting the fans decide what they want to see and putting the creative control back where it belongs.”

“For the last couple of years, fans have kept asking when we will be able to complete the Martin Bristol trilogy,” said Mena. “Through Kickstarter, fans will not only be able to help realize the final episode of Martin’s story, but also pre-order the DVD, along with a menu of bonus perks for those who make significant pledges. It’s the ultimate in customized entertainment!”

In Malevolence 3, Martin Bristol returns to where it all began: the home where he was kidnapped from. But he is not the boy who disappeared over 10 years ago. Tortured and abused at the hands of his psychotic captor, Graham Sutter, Martin is damaged beyond repair. Lurking in the shadows of suburbia, he stalks and kills without remorse, picking his victims at random – or are they? Special Agent William Perkins follows Martin’s trail of terror, desperate to capture him before he kills again. Martin’s family, mourning his disappearance for over 10 years, is informed not only that he is alive, but that he is responsible for the wave of murder sweeping through their town. Will they be able to reunite with their long lost son before it’s too late, or will Perkins have to use excessive force to bring him down?

Breaking Glass Pictures and Libertine Films are proud to announce the upcoming Blu-Ray (SRP $29.99) and DVD (SRP $24.99) release of Jules Stewart’s directorial debut, K-11, a riveting drama that tells the story of a man’s plight after winding up in K-11, the Los Angeles County Jail’s transgender inmate unit.  K-11 is currently screening at select theaters in fifteen cities around the country and is available nationwide on Video On Demand.

K-11 stars Goran Visnjic (ABC-TV’s new hit series “Red Widow”, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, “ER”) as Raymond Saxx, a businessman whose drug use leads him to incarceration in the section of the Los Angeles County Jail reserved for LGBT inmates and firmly under the heel of Mousey (Mexican superstar Kate Del Castillo, Under the Same Moon, “La Reina del Sur”, “Weeds”), a malicious transgendered inmate.  Saxx has no idea how he got there — all he knows is he needs to get the hell out…alive and intact. Aggressive cellmates, corrupt officials and his own issues are just a few challenges he faces with while he pieces together a way out of this entirely new kind of rabbit hole.

Jules Stewart, mother to Twilight star Kristen, is a lauded script supervisor with over thirty years of experience in Hollywood. In 2010, Stewart formed Libertine Films with her business partner, producer Tom Wright. K-11 is their first feature. MAGNET RELEASING WIPES THE COMPETITION CLEAN AND PICKS UP JACOB VAUGHAN’S COMEDY/HORROR “MILO” STARRING KEN MARINO & GILLIAN JACOBS

“MILO” TO BE UNLEASHED ON NORTH AMERICAN AUDIENCES LATER THIS YEAR

Magnet Releasing has acquired North American distribution rights to the acclaimed comedy/horror film MILO. Written and directed by Jacob Vaughan and starring Ken Marino & Gillian Jacobs, MILO premiered last weekend at the 2013 SXSW Film Festival. Blending the gory elements of a classic critter film (à la GREMLINS) with the lighthearted comedy of an unlikely friendship (reminiscent of TED), MILO was one of the most talked about and unique films of the festival.

The sale for MILO was completed late Friday night, making it the last deal to close during this year’s SXSW.

Duncan’s (Ken Marino) life is a real pain in the ass. Tormented by manipulative, crooked boss (Patrick Warburton), a nagging mother (Mary Kay Place), a deadbeat new age dad (Stephen Root), and a sweet, yet pressuring, wife (Gillian Jacobs), his mounting stress starts to trigger an insufferable gastrointestinal reaction. Out of ideas and at the end of his rope, Duncan seeks the help of a hypnotherapist (Peter Stormare), who helps him discover the root of his unusual stomach pain: a pintsized demon living in his intestine that, triggered by excessive anxiety, forces its way out and slaughters the people who haveangered him. Out of fear that his intestinal gremlin may target its wrath on the wrong person, Duncan attempts to befriend it, naming it Milo and indulging it to keep its seemingly insatiable appetite at bay.

MILO features notable puppetry by Frank Langley and Bob Mano.

MILO was produced by Adele Romanski with New Artists Alliance’s Gabriel Cowan and John Suits. Executive producers include Mark & Jay Duplass, John Norris, Kerry Johnson, Dallas Sonnier, Jack Heller and Floren Shieh Productions’ Clay Floren and Aimee Shieh.

“Just like Ken Marino, our stomachs were hurting watching MILO, happily because of laughter rather than an intestinal demon,” said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles. “MILO is a rare entry in the horror-comedy genre that truly delivers.”

Jacob Vaughan said, “Magnet is the perfect home for MILO. The company is second-to-none in releasing quality genre movies and their passion for MILO is overwhelming. I’m confident they will do an incredible job positioning the film in the marketplace and getting it seen by audiences everywhere.”

The deal for MILO was negotiated by Magnolia/Magnet SVP of Acquisitions Dori Begley and Director of Acquisitions Peter van Steemburg, with ICM Partners on behalf of the filmmakers and producers.

Last but certainly not least is a trailer for an Italian Anthology movie The Pyramid.  Check out the synopsis below.

The Pyramid, an anthological horror flick divided into four different stories, all of which are connected by one object; a bizarre little pyramid. Over the centuries the pyramid has been the catalyst for wide-spread death and destruction and, after being lost for years, it has accidentally been reawakened to once again bring forth madness and mayhem.

There are four segments : Ritual ( directed by Alex Visani), Dream Door (by Luca Alessandro), Pestilence (by the duo Albanesi/Chiesa) and Apocalypse (by Antonio Zannone). The first episode Ritual which is the opening of the entire movie. An unfortunate guy found the pyramid (we see, during a short intro the story of its creation by demons) and slowly becomes possessed by the infernal object. It’s a story of possession and struggle with evil forces with gore and also ironic moments. Raffaele Ottolenghi (who writes the episode with Alex Visani) and I were inspired by Clive Barker’s Books of Blood, Evil Dead 2 and there are some influences from Tales From The Crypt the serial.
After the conclusion of Ritual there’s a girl who came in to the possession of the pyramid and this is the beginning of Dream Door, the second story. In this case the influence was Notte Profonda (Deep Night) directed by Fabio Salerno, Wes Craven’s Nightmare On Elm Street and a bit of Hellraiser, of course. During the episode we will see the difficult relationship between a young girl and his boyfriend, who’s a comic artist, and the terrible effects of the pyramid on them. This is the most introspective segmet with a strange and allucinative dreaming atmosphere.

Then is the turn of Pestilence in which we’ll see the contagious effects of the pyramid, which now has gained great powers. It will spread an horrible sort of pestilence, in the vein of the masterpiece Prince of Darkness from the master John Carpenter. This is the most aggressive and full-packed action episode.

Then there’s Apocalyspe that will show us the ultimate effect of the previous pestilence. The world is near to the end, the human race is almost extinct but there’s a little hope still alive. A couple of post-nuclear knights that will fight to find and destroy the evil pyramid. Of course this epsiode is gory homage to post-atomic b-movies of the eighties.

The ambitious project is born from the collaboration of five young independent Italian directors: Alex Visani, Antonio Zannone, Luca Alessandro and the duo Roberto Albanesi & Simone Chiesa.
Each one of them will give birth to an episode of terror generated by the pyramid.

THE PYRAMID gather the strength and passion of this group of artists and represent the Italian independent scene in fact each one of the segments will be filmed in different parts of Italy to prove that horror is alive and kicking and take its wrath along all the country.

I hope we continue to hear more about The Pyramid here on the Bloodsprayer soon!

That’s gonna do it for this edition of the Weekly Bloodlines!  Till next time…

Matt has been a fan of horror films since his first trip to the video store when he was transfixed by classic vhs cover art. Now he primarily enjoys films from the grindhouse era of the 70's and 80's, but holds a soft spot in in his heart for low budget flicks.
