Greetings, readers. Now, as you may have surmised from my coverage of the Buffalo Screams Film Festival, I am from Buffalo, NY. Born and raised. It’s a town with it’s high points — Wings, anyone? — and it’s low points — the Buffalo Bills being one of the biggest jokes in the NFL, and the notorious Buffalo Winter — but every so often something happens that makes me really very proud of the Nickel City. This is one of those times.
You remember Greg Lamberson, of course. The man behind SLIME CITY, SLIME CITY MASSACRE, and novels like THE FRENZY WAY and THE JAKE HELMAN FILES, and one of the masterminds behind the Buffalo Screams Film Festival, Greg will be running a double-feature screaming- excuse me, screening – of SLIME CITY and SLIME CITY MASSACRE, back to back, on Monday, May 9th, 2011, at the Market Arcade Film and Arts Centre in Buffalo. Market Arcade is at 639 Main Street, and is a lovely theater, let me just say.
Why is Greg running this double-feature? Well, for one thing, the 2-disc DVD of SLIME CITY MASSACRE gets released the very next day, Tuesday May 10th. But more importantly, all proceeds from this screening — ALL proceeds, 100% of them — go to Benjamin Heppel, age 8, and his family. Benjamin was diagnosed with Leukemia in August, 2010 at the age of 7. He’s had quite a bit of treatment already, but he still has a long way to go. Benjamin has remained optimistic through every ordeal of his illness.
Greg had this to say:
When I learned about Benjamin’s condition, I wanted to do something to help him and his family. Most of us can only imagine what it’s like to have a sick child. It’s a heart wrenching situation, and an enormous financial drain on any family, not only because of the inherent medical costs, but because the parents must take long leaves from work to care for their child. I hope that the horror fans in Buffalo will support this great cause.
In addition to a fantastic double-feature, there’s going to be a raffle that is already looking damned impressive. Via his network of contacts, Greg has arranged for a wide variety of authors, filmmakers, publishers and distributors to donate all sorts of signed mass-market paperbacks, signed DVDs, limited-edition hardcovers, issues of Fangoria and Rue Morgue, even film props. To top it all off, the first 100 people through the door will receive a secret 3-D CD-ROM, complete with 3-D glasses, created by an undisclosed filmmaker friend of Greg’s.
The double-feature and raffle, once again, will be at Market Arcade, 639 Main Street in Buffalo, NY, on May 9th, 2011, from 7:00 to 10:30 EST. Tickets for the double-feature will run $8.00 at the door (and when was the last time you saw one movie for $8, let alone two?) and raffle tickets will be $5 $2! The Facebook page for the event can be found here, and if you can’t make it but still want to give your support to Benjamin and his family, his Caringbridge page can be found here.
Come on, Horror Fans. We all know we have hearts, even if they’re in jars on our desks. Help a good kid out.
