RIP Paul Gray (April 8, 1972-May 24, 2010)

First of all, I’d like to say that this has been a truly sad year for heavy metal fans. Type O Negative vocalist/bassist, Peter Steele died of heart failure on April 14, 2010 at the age of 48, and heavy metal pioneer, Ronnie James Dio, lost his battle with stomach cancer on May 16, 2010 at the age of 67.

On May 24, 2010, it was reported by The Des Moines Register, that Slipknot bassist, Paul Dedrick Gray had died. He had been found in a room at the Town Plaza hotel in Urbandale, Iowa. He was 38 years old. The cause of death is unknown, but an autopsy is scheduled for May 25th. He was survived by his wife, Brenna who was expecting their first child. No official statement has been made by the band regarding Gray’s death.

Paul will be missed by many metal fans and many horror fans, since the band is well known for their eye-catching look, in which each member has a unique mask. Gray’s especially, since it had a resemblance to Hannibal Lecter’s mask in The Silence of the Lambs. Also, the band payed tribute to the 1980 horror classic, The Shining in their music video for “Spit It Out”, and their short film for their latest single, “Snuff” featured appearances by Malcolm McDowell and Ashley Laurence of Hellraiser fame.

Thank you, Paul, for giving us maggots, great music to rock out to. May you rest in peace.

  1. While I was never really a Slipknot fan, I can appreciate a touching eulogy. Thank you.
