Before you read on, make sure you watch this:
I would be some sort of horrific heel if I didn’t tell you I have been a proponent of this movie since Smith first announced the writing of it back in 2005. The “youth of America versus the religious right” premise is just beautifully simple, and had always put me in the mind of all those Suburban Satanism flicks of the late 70s and early 80s but, y’know, backwards. I’m no Kevin Smith apologist though. Hell, I don’t even like most of his work (I do love Jersey Girl though, go figure), but that man can sure spin a yarn in such a unique and engaging way it’s difficult not to get taken along for the ride. What I am saying here is, I can listen to man talk for hours on end. And, much like a gazillion others, I do. On a weekly basis.
Following the weekly Red State of the Union Q&A podcasts, I have heard this teaser’s audio many times but today is the first time I actually got to see it. This trailer totally does it for me, in a way that the slow trickle release of posters just hasn’t. Check out the chunky viscera Smith has dragged screaming out of the RED One. Witness the surly glare of the no doubt totally in-the-zone John Goodman. Ask yourself why the heck Michael Parks doesn’t get more leading roles. Carefully consider how freaking creepy it all is. Everything you need is there, packed tightly into those 74 unrelenting seconds, bursting at the seams.
The more astute in the audience may have clocked the two links at the end of the video too. I jumped straight on to Chrome to check those puppies out. The first coopersdell.com lead me to the Red State official website, meh, interesting enough I guess. But waiting for me at goddamnusa.com was a newspaper clipping providing a little bit of back story on the shady figure at the heart of Red State, along with this passage:
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith- and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-
Interesting stuff, I’m sure you will agree. Like I said right at the off, I am super psyched on Red State and can’t wait for more stuff to come out about it, viral and otherwise. On the same note, I can’t recommend the Red State Q&A podcast highly enough, especially if you are interested in the film making process, or if you are looking for nuggets of juicy gossip about the movie.
See what happens when you stop bitching about critics, the studio system and getting thrown off of planes, Kev? People are going ape-poop over this thing, and rightly so. God damn, I can’t wait!
