Troma Pounds the Final Nail into its Credibility Coffin

Toxie PosterLloyd Kaufman.  The man, who claims to be a champion of independent cinema and inspired so many young people to “Make Your Own Damn Movie”, has officially flushed his credibility down the toilet.

Many people my age are somewhat familiar with Troma Entertainment.  I remember watching movies like The Toxic Avenger, Surf Nazis Must Die and Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD on the program ‘USA Up All Night’.

It was Lloyd’s vision of making whacked out – fight the censors, gore-comedy that inspired so many people (Trey Parker and Matt Stone for instance) to be themselves and make what they wanted to see and The Toxic Avenger was one of these films.  Full of sex, nudity, potty humor and disgusting sight gags, it pushed the envelope of decency.  It became a cornerstone franchise for Troma Entertainment and a fan favorite.

Lover ToxieBut Lloyd and Troma have decided to let Toxie go and become the wholesome, decent person that Lloyd had always envisioned him to be?  And that person is a family friendly, PG-13 environmentalist.  Hey, Toxie has twins on the way right?  Time to be a role model?  Anyways…

Producer Charlie Corwin’s (The Squid and the Whale, Half Nelson) company Original Media has financed the acquisition of rights to the Toxic Avenger franchise that includes four sequels, an animated TV series and comic books. Original Media will finance the development of a script.

Original Media will update Toxie into a ‘Green’ Superhero and plans on making the new franchise a family friendly PG-13 action comedy akin to The Mask.

Akiva Goldsman, Richard Saperstein and Charlie Corwin are set to produce the film while Weed Road Pictures’ Kerry Foster will be executive producer on The Toxic Avenger with Lloyd Kaufman, Michael Herz and Shara Kay is co-producer.

Kaufman’s next book should be titled “How to roll over for a Pile of Cash”.

In my head, my childhood was very similar to the guys in Stand By Me, The Goonies and The Monster Squad. In reality, my friends and I were just a bunch of nerds, raised in good Christian homes, riding our bikes and hanging out in the middle of nowhere Ohio. Nothing about my childhood was like that of Gordie's or Mikey's or even Sean's as much as I wanted it to be. But growing up in North West Ohio I felt a strong connection to those guys and I really wanted to be them. However, I wasn't them and I had a life of my own created and shaped by my own decisions. My friends and I were totally obsessed with any horror movies we could con our parents into renting. I was ten when Freddy started coming after me, Chucky started hiding under my bed and I could start hearing voices in the TV static. The nightmares began at age ten and follow me till this day. I love horror and am always looking for that movie that will grab me and screw with my imagination like when I was a kid. I am the bass player for The Highgears and the head staff member here at The Blood Sprayer, if you don't like it - too bad.
