Twilight gets a bad rap with genre hounds. Maybe it's because of it's the front runner in ticket sales which makes it easy fodder for attack. I'm not opposed to sparkly vampires, paint your friggin' vamps magenta if you like, but make sure that when you make a film that your moving the legend forward and not simply dissolving the important parts of the vampire lore. For example, would I remove the big bad wolf from Little Red Riding Hood or make the wolf a swell guy who doesn't mean to attack Little Red Riding Hood... that's almost into the Buffy vs. Spike realm of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Difference is, Whedon realizes that vamps are still bad guys even when they're good guys.

people r different, some of them like movies like twilight and others like movies like fright night, and others like me like them both, the thing i like about twilight is showing the vampire as something perfecct, calm, beautiful...and romantic. fright night also shows vamires as something perfect but without making us forget that they are vampires, with showing that killing part of them, and that's what most people want to see, some action, so is u asked me, fright night is a little better because it's more exciting

of course like your web-site however you need to take a look at the spelling on quite a few of your posts. Many of them are rife with spelling problems and I find it very bothersome to inform the truth on the other hand I'll definitely come back again.

I've been to Vegas...I couldn't find this show ANYWHERE! But, I did get to eat prime rib and sushi at 10:00 at night, followed by the opportunity to walk down the street with a tallboy of PBR in my hand, looking at weirdos and prostitutes. Different movie, I guess...Hostel III sounds more interesting...

I finally saw the film. I'd have to say that Tony Curtis's portrayal of Harry Erskine is dead-on, but the film is not good, except that it's so bad that it's kind of good. (Although, to paraprhase a line from "Ghost World", it may be so bad that it goes straight through good, back to bad again.)

Great list. Of the horror films listed I've seen all but Valhalla Rising and Witches Brew (Valhalla Rising sounds especially great, but I'll check both out).

For me I Saw The Devil was this year's cream of the crop. Just a relentless film that grabs you from the start and never lets go. I love Korean cinema, and could rattle off a dozen of great films to see (The Nowhere Man, The Chaser, and Truck, to name but a few), but ISTD just totally blew me away. Everyone is familiar with Min-sik Choi from Oldboy, but Lee Byung Hun is a little less known over here, and he was amazing, once again (everyone should see him in The Good, The Bad, The Weird, which is flat out one of the best action movies of all time). I can't recommend this movie enough to people. This is Scorcese, Coen Brothers type of quality film making, if not better.

I read "Blind Panic". Not bad. But the "Manitou" thing is just getting tired. Also I don't know why Masterton didn't explore that his hero, Harry Erskine, gained some vampire powers in the preceding book.

Well, this was my interpretation. Anything goes really when deconstructing a film, as long as you can back it up. I felt I did that, and there is never any one true interpretation to something that is multifaceted. Besides, having the director tell you his vision, is always different from what the viewer thinks. It's never black and white.

I've loved her for years...and then I saw Jackie Brown and realized that behind that tough, sexy broad was one hell of a great actress. Her final scene mouthing the words to "Across 110th Street" as she's driving (alone) to Mexico is some of the most heartbreaking acting I've ever scene.

Wow - great site, damn I love this movie. Was so pissed as an 80's kid when I watched it, flick is such an insult to all that is good and gory, but revisited in my 30's it's now a classic - nary a weekend passes without it running in our house. The re-use of all those Goblin tracks in the score is genius, and in the end, almost oddly poignant (Quiet Drops from BUIO OMEGA, closing the picture out) - funny how for some people like me even the worst POS italo-zombies, as long as they are from the golden 70's and 80's, stand the test of time.
I love all three in the series. Reading the synopsis of number 3, I thought it would just be a retread, but by focussing on the girls and, as you say, using more cameras (good ol' VHS!), it keeps things fresh. I'm not sure how much more mileage they can get out of the formula though.

I finished "Manitou Blood", and am sticking with what I said earlier. Almost a great novel, but didn't quite make it.

At some point I'll read "Blind Panic", but I'm expecting it's going to be more of the same with just another infliction imposed on the U.S. population.

They should remake Top Gun and Tom Cruise should play himself. Kelly McGillis should also play herself... in fact all surviving cast members should play themselves. Then they should add protests outside the flight school more alcohol and heroin. Somebody get Ironside on the phone!

I couldn't agree more. Zombie was brilliant and House by the Cemetery should arrive any day now. Zombie is the perfect reason to buy a blu ray player and make a convert of yourself. My wife told me I was completely f'd when I "forced her" to watch the eye/splinter scene. Imagine if she came in earlier for zombie v shark!

The scariest thing about this movie was Martin's bare stomach. But I guess when you use the title "Human Centipede," you can ignore typical movie requirements like plot, story, or actual acting.

I'm just under a hundred pages from the end of "Manitou Blood". Up to about 3/4 of the way in, I thought this was the best of the "Manitou" series and one of the best vampire books I've read, and then the plot started taking a turn that I did not like, and it seems to be going downhill.

*******SPOILER ALERT****************
I did not think it was necessary to make this yet another book where Misquamacus is the villain, and I'm not too happy about Masterton's use of 9/11. That tragedy is still too fresh for a lot of us to be used for entertainment, especially in a vampire story. Typical of Masterton, there are inconsistencies in how this book fits into the world of the "Manitou" novels. Amelia is still alive, after dying in the first novel and being alive in the third one, and New York seems to be okay even though much of it had sunk into the ground in "Burial" (including at least one of the WTC towers, which would have made 9/11 impossible unless the tower was rebuilt before 9/11 . . . leading me to my earlier point: Masterton should have left 9/11 out of this!).

I'll finish the book before making a final decision, but these are my comments as I approach the end of it.

I'm reading "Burial" now . . . so far the most brutal Masterton novel I've read, and that's saying a lot because, as I pointed out to the author on his web site, he seems to have a penchant for genital mutilation. The reappearance of a character who died in the first "Manitou" book is just plain sloppy.

I’m reading “Burial” now . . . so far the most brutal Masterton novel I’ve read, and that’s saying a lot because, as I pointed out to the author on his web site, he seems to have a penchant for genital mutilation. (Because I haven’t finished “Burial” and have not read the “Manitou” novels that follow it, I have not read your entire article.)

I just saw Black Twilight Collective in Boston 2 weeks ago in a basement with about 50 other people. Awesome stuff! I hadn't even heard of them until I found out about the show from a friend who books the gigs. The entire concept of the collective is great.

I will definitely check out Arizmenda, and thanks for the link to all the other stuff! Cool beans! Something to listen to between horror flicks!

I totally agree that BM is in a great period right now. I love the old school stuff, but I could live without some of it's trappings, such as the corpse paint and nail armbands (though that won't stop me from liking a band...the new Endstille kicks ass, for example). It's good to see some bands really stretching BM's boundaries (and Deathspell Omega has already transcended them, imo). There's just so much good stuff out there right now.

Thanks again for the links and the article!

Yeah, I listened to the Leviathan track. Super stoked on it. REALLY different from what we are used to from him, but after hearing what he did with that last Twilight record, I'm not surprised. That new Craft is a total banger. If you're not familiar, check out that most recent Arizmenda release. Actually, anything from the "Crepusculo Negro" (Black Twilight) collective from out of LA is remarkable stuff. Profound Lore just posted on their facebook that they are going to do a limited CD re-release of all the Tukaaria and Odz Manouk material and I was really stoked to hear that news. Not the best of the Crepusculo kult, but killer stuff nonetheless.

If you're digging that WITTR, Go here http://gileadmedia.bandcamp.com/ and check out the new Barghest record, the new False record, and that Ash Borer/Fell Voices split. More runners up for top ten list shit. I can't stop listening to Fell Voices material.

People want to romanticize the early 90's Norwegian scene, and that stuff is classic, but I really think in the future, when people look towards a high water mark in black metal, they will be looking at this time right now. SOOO much rad stuff in the underground.

Cool stuff. Listening to some of that myself (Absu, Fyrnask, Abhor and Atriarch). Really hooked on the new Wolves in the Throne Room CD, as well the new Craft CD Void.

Leviathan has a new song up on YouTube if you haven't heard it yet. Sounds awesome to me, but that's no surprise. Massive Conspiracy was my fave CD the year it came out, and all his stuff is pretty damn cool.

I'll have to check out the others you mention. Thanks!

Hey Jimmy, thank you so much for the kind shout-out to my blog. It really is flattering to know people read it(i rarely get comments) and it's nice to know that my writing style is enjoyed, because I enjoy writing the way I do.
Thanks again, and hopefully I'll run into you at this year's event.

Thanks for bringing AAFCC to my attention. Never would have bothered with them based on the name haha. Really digging it. You are spot on about that Amebix album (I didn't get into them in my youth either) and I can't wait to hear the rest of the Satanic Royalty (even though I wish they stuck with the raw-as-fuck production of their other stuff). Cheers!

I have not found any websites that stream Chemical Burn movies, and they are not available through netflix or blockbuster. As far as I can see DVD is the only options. You can pick it up at amazon for as little as $7, and I'd say it's worth it.

I enjoy Masterton's writing, especially "House of Bones" and "The Hell Candidate" (written as Thomas Luke). I do disagree with some of your review, however.

I thought the first "Manitou" book became just plain silly. When Harry called upon the spirit of the police computer, I must admit that I was not only not scared, but I was rolling my eyes.

I liked "Revenge" much better. It was more convincing to me that medicine men would fight each other with ancient spirits that they conjured against each other -- not the spirits of typewriters and computers. My only complain was that Harry was some sort of comedian, and not a funny one.

Masteron's novels seem to be very hit-or-miss; I either love them or hate them. I'm going to continue to read the "Manitou" series.

So sad. I was honestly surprised at just HOW MUCH I was genuinely saddened when I heard about this. It was so surprising, because he always seemed so full of life. Definitely a shock, and a tragic one at that. It happened too early. I'm thankful I got to share words with him the single time I had the opportunity. He was an incredibly kind, friendly individual, and a talented one, too. I don't think he ever got the credit he deserved for his musical talents.

Frankenhooker looks beautiful on blu-ray! Synapse sold advanced copies over the weekend in Cleveland. Haven't watched the Maniac Cop yet but they were hyping it's transfer. Preordered both Fulci flicks for October already. Heard rumor that Grindhouse Releasings gonna finally head into blu-ray in 2012 with Cannibal Holocaust with a ton of new features.

Watched this last week, and it's the best zombie film I've seen in decades, imo. Don't want to over hype it for people, but it really is a great zombie flick. It's not perfect, but it's closer than the last 3000 zombie flicks. :)
