Greetings, readers, Bill here, grinning ear to ear and damned proud to bring you a little update from Buffalo, New York. As you know, I’m a resident of the Nickel City, and a little while back I brought you some news regarding BUFFALO SCREAMS HORROR FESTIVAL, a film festival in my own home town, organized by Greg “Slimeguy” Lamberson and Emil J. Novak, both of whom were kind enough to be interviewed for The Blood Sprayer.
Now, I’m feeling a little guilty because I haven’t been keeping you, our readers, up to date on what’s been going on with BUFFALO SCREAMS. While the full schedule won’t be available until October 1st, Greg and Emil have been tantalizing us with some tidbits of programming announcements and such. And, as per my pledge to keep BUFFALO SCREAMS covered for The Blood Sprayer, I’m passing them along to you:
The documentary HERSCHELL GORDON LEWIS: THE GODFATHER OF GORE will be screening at the festival, exploring the life, times, and body of work of Herschell Gordon Lewis, the mastermind behind THE GORE GORE GIRLS, THE WIZARD OF GORE, TWO THOUSAND MANIACS, BLOOD FEAST, and COLOR ME BLOOD RED. Lewis was a true pioneer, blazing the way for the modern gore-drenched horror flick with his brilliantly colorful and bloody films. Color me excited!
NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD: REANIMATED will also be shown. I caught most of this at the Hudson Horror Film Festival back in…gad, was it May? Time seems to fly so fast these days. Basically my co-adventurers and I arrived just a little past the beginning of the screening, but I saw enough to say with absolute confidence: this will knock your socks off. A really cool, visionary little piece showcasing a wide variety of artists’ take on Romero’s classic.
UNDER THE SCARES, a documentary about the Indie Horror Film Industry by Steve Villaneuve, will be showcased. This is actually the first I’ve heard of this documentary, and as soon as I knew the subject matter my heart began to race. For someone as fascinated with the inner workings of the film industry as I am, this promises to be a real treat. The poster art only confirmed my suspicions — My butt’s gonna be in the seat for this one!
BUFFALO SCREAMS’ fourth showcase feature was announced to be Julian Grant’s new zombie film THE DEFILED. Here’s what the press release has to say:
“A man infected with a deadly viral disease must cope with his newborn child in a savage world. He is joined in this odyssey by a woman he saves from near death and together they must brave a desperate new world. This black and white, non-verbal film follows this unlikely family as they must brave this horrible near-future and come to terms with their own fears and torments. Not for the faint of heart or squeamish, ‘The Defiled’ is reminiscent of Guy Maddin, David Lynch and Andrei Tarkovsky in this examination of love, death and sacrifice.”
Sounds a bit more cerebral than your average indie zombie film these days, and in my eyes, that’s a huge plus. I’m getting pretty bored with zombies as they’re generally presented these days, and innovative uses of zombies — particularly thoughtful use of zombies as metaphor — are something I really look for.
And of course, the big news just released today: Scream Queen Debbie Rochon (star of THE GOOD SISTERS, SLIME CITY MASSACRE, and about seven trillion other films — seriously, she is the hardest working actress in horror today, including a recent stint as a guest judge on VH1’s SCREAM QUEENS and co-hosting Fangoria Radio on Sirius/XM Satellite Radio with Dee Snider of Twisted Sister) will be in Buffalo as the Guest of Honor of BUFFALO SCREAMS!
While Debbie is no stranger to Buffalo (having assisted Lloyd Kaufman during the filming of POULTRYGEIST and having starred in SLIME CITY MASSACRE, both filmed locally), I hope you’ll join me in welcoming her back to the Nickel City.
Once BUFFALO SCREAMS begins (October 21st through the 24th), I hope to be on site for at least part of every day, and I WILL, without a doubt, be providing as detailed coverage as I can for The Blood Sprayer, so check back for that Frankensteinian Bison head!
